Australia Advanced?

9 min read

The unknown history of what is supposed to be Australia’s National Anthem has seen this Australian Government change the lyrics to a song respectfully dedicated to the Sons and Daughters of Australia. We can see from this copy of the original score written and composed by Amicus otherwise known as Peter Dodds McCormack in the latter part of the 20th Century.

Peter Dodds McCormack was a member of the Presbyterian Church and official precentor of the General Presbyterian Assembly of New South Wales and the Commonwealth Assembly. His last formal appearance was at the Presbyterian Military Institution at Liverpool Camp by the Governor-General.

Having travelled from Glasgow across the oceans to Australia in the hope for a new life he landed at Sydney in 1855 and become a prominent member of Australian Society. It is his love for country that saw him write the score and lyrics to this now famous song.

Trove defines the author as being also known as McCormick, P. D. (Peter Dodds) (1834-1916); Amicus (1834-1916); McCormick, P. D. (1834-1916); McCormick, P. D.

We can see from the original copy of Advance Australia Fair that he used the title Amicus as a Composer to the piece of music which was performed by Mr Andrew Fairfax and composed as Pianoforte and arranged in a Solo and four part song.

The cover of this score describes it as a four part song, the first two verses displayed in the musical score with the third and fourth verses printed as lyrics only following the musical score.

The original lyrics to Advance Australia Fair define the dedication to the Sons and Daughters of Australia in the first, defining lineage to rejoice in our Sons.

Australians sons, let us rejoice
For we are young and free;
Weve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in natures gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joiceful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

When galant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o’er;
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore;
Then here he raised Old England flag,
The standard of the brace;
With all her faults we love her still,
Britain rules the wave.
In joyful strains then let us sing Advance Australia Fair.

Divided into two musical scores, the first being for a piano to play, the second repeat of the music details the Soprano and Tenor Voice to the wording.

Being of the Presbyterian Church Assembly it is clear Peter had intended for it to be sung by a choir and with large voice and emotion. Musically their is emphasis on the lyrical side to the score.

The lyrics are then printed clearly titled Advance Australia Fair as Patriotic Song. The third and fourth verses are displayed after the musical score which is to be repeated for each verse as was done to accompany the first two verses.

Everybody knows that Advance Australia Fair became the National Song for Australia, but very few people know of the history behind that change. Since 1901 the Anthem of Country was God Save the Queen (or King relative to the Monarchy).

The Australian Governments Prime Minister and Cabinet Web Site details that the original song was produced by Peter D McCormack, stating that the original composition was in deed his, written in 1878.

In 1973, which is no suprise given the changes made to the Australian Government under Gough Whitlam during that period, they wish to remove the Anthem God Save the Queen and put to the people their ability to provide a National Anthem. It is clear they wanted to remove the lineage that existed in the Commonwealth of Australia as its Sons.

The Prime Minister and Cabinet admit that in 1974 they removed the Anthem God Save the Queen and installed Advance Australia Fair in its place. But were they fair about it?

In 1976 the Anthem God Save the Queen was reinstated and is to this day called the Royal Anthem and still to this day sung on specific occasion, although the general population as Citizens of this Australia are none the wise to this.

In 1977 the Australian Electoral Commission decided that Advance Australia Fair would become the National Anthem which is kind of strange, they wanted their “electors” or “citizens” of their “body corporate” not singing God Save the Queen.

And then in 1984 Governor-General, the Rt Hon Sir Ninian M Stephen proclaimed Advance Australia Fair with verses as the National Anthem of Australia. This can be seen very clearly on the Prime Minister and Cabinet Web Site links below.

What becomes very clear is that the verses that were authorised to be sung by Citizens of this Australia are definitely not the words of Peter D McCormack as he wrote them over 140 years ago.

The two authorised verses of the Australian National Anthem, as proclaimed in 1984, are:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts;
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We’ll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

With the original wording of the song changed by this Australian Government before they were brought into the minds and homes of the Australian People are now being challenged by Gladys Berejiklians proposal that uses the sympathy of the Aborigine Peoples of Australia as her sounding board.

With her recent Koala Killer media backlash, it seems as though Gladys is using something controversial and pointless to distract from her duties as Premier of New South Wales. This seems to be the general modus operandi of the politician that is trying to distract you from something else of importance that they dont want to discuss.

What is very clear by this foray into the history of the Australian National Anthem is that they have taken the words of a Patriotic Song and changed them for their own means. It is unclear who wrote the lyrics currently in use by this Australian Government.

What is also very clear is that the production of the original score displays the correct Coat of Arms of Australia with its Motto “Advance Australia” still currently in use by the Australian Cricket Team.

This Australian Government has taken from something of loyalty to a specific entity that exists and changed it for their own means and proclaiming it under Governor-General of office that was changed through Letters Patent 1984.

We can see by the first verse which is almost verbatum the same as Peter D McCormacks original composition that they have changed the wording to remove our Title as Sons of the Commonwealth of Australia. Compare their authorised verse with the original.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts;
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair

The original demonstrates that they have modified the lyrics to suit themselves instead of proclaiming a patriotic song of Australia.

Australians sons, let us rejoice
For we are young and free;
Weve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in natures gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joiceful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

With the word “Sons” changed to “all” in their authorised version, the changes go on into the second verse of the song as well.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We’ll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Changing the words relative to our skies to Beneath our Radiant Southern Cross defining a different Queen Star to this land where in the third verse of the original sings, We’ll rise to high renown and shine, Like our glorious Southern Star. We can also see that any reference to the historical song are changed altogether, and that from the first initial verse, the second, third and fourth of this Australian Government bare no resemblance to the song at all.

When galant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o’er;
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore;
Then here he raised Old England flag,
The standard of the brace;
With all her faults we love her still,
Britain rules the wave.
In joyful strains then let us sing Advance Australia Fair.

What is very clear here is that they have taken the musical score dedicated to the Sons and Daughters of this Australia and modified it to their own means. And in 1984 when proclaiming Governor General of Australia and closing down the Office of Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia have installed it as their “National” Song.

Most Australians are unaware of the original lyric to this composition and the stark relevance to the history of colonial roots displayed in its lyrics. It can be seen as an abomination by this Government of Australia that it is attempting to sway the minds of people and not addressing the changes to the Countries Governance post 1967 when the Admiralty Ensign was lowered and a different White Ensign raised atop His Majesties Admiralty Fleet.

The fourth verse of the original composition becomes a stark indication that something is amiss when it speaks of this Admiralty Fleet and the nativity of the Australian People on Holy Ground.

Should foreign foe e’er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We’ll rouse to arms like sires of yore,
To guard our native strand;
Britannia then shall surely know,
Though oceans roll between,
Her sons in fair Australia’s land
Still keep their courage green.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

Is it any wonder that the Australian Cricket Team still sport the Coat of Arms on the front of their Baggy Green Caps?

What we can see here is that post 1967, after the demise of the currency in the Currency Act 1965, that this Australia has been changed, its Commonwealth removed from it, it is acting as a Nation State of the Admiralty now displaying a different White Ensign that it had done for the first 67 years of its existance.

With defence of the oceans to the people of the lands of this Commonwealth of Australia, we have seen the people Nationalised and then manipulated over their history by a Government which has taken the composition of historical importance and patriotism and changed it into a bastardised version for its own means.

What are your thoughts on the actions of this Government and the changes that have obviously been made to a song at which is sung at every Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day across the country?

  1. It would be insteresting to see this played in its original composition. If there are any budding musicians out there that would like to give it a go, this song is not under any copyright, although the lyrics proclaimed by the Australian Government are deemed by them to be in the Public Domain, they hold a copyright over the “song” and only allow “their version” to be sung for non-commercial purposes.

  2. I also would like to see an original version made. Thanks for the article, very educational.

  3. My son has the original version and has practiced it on his violin of all instruments. Next time I see him I’ll ask if I can record him. Thanks Steve

    1. Please do ask your son Jason, I’d love to hear it. Once again, a very interesting and informative read by Steven, thank you

  4. I am absolutely appalled! The covert rat sneakiness enacted to bury the blood, sweat and tears our forebearer’s lost while being used as tools to fight for this land’s freedom is being disgraced. The entire contents of our parliament house should be charged and imprisoned for treason with no chance of bail. I am flying a 1901 Federal Land Flag purchased from Dawn Kelly website, but it is far from enough. Who have our people been lost to??? All avenues of truth are being rapidly blocked… Please Australia, wake up. I am lost for words but will not give up. I do not consent to being a member of this strain of puppets acting as Australian’s and Australian leaders. They are far from any quality attributed to leadership and far from any quality I grew up to recognize as being Australian. Shame on the lot. Shame on them.
